COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Novelist Michael Farris Smith, author of the critically acclaimed “Rivers,” will be the featured speaker at a Jan. 8 gathering of Mississippi University for Women alumni.
The 4 p.m. event is being held at Merrehope (905 Martin Luther King Drive) and will offer light refreshments. Cost is $10 per person, payable to Betty Lou Jones.
Smith, associate professor of English, is a McComb native who joined The W faculty in 2007. His novel, published last September by Simon & Schuster, has been called “a stunning work of speculative fiction” by the Atlanta-Journal Constitution. Kirkus Reviews says it is “tense, moving, and expertly executed,” and novelist James Lee Burke has placed Smith among writers such as Cormac McCarthy and William Faulkner.
In December, “Rivers” was named by BookRiot as one of the best books of 2013. It is now available from Amazon both in hardcover and as a Kindle downloadable e-book.
“We are excited to have a talented contemporary writer join us for this event,” Jones said. “Dr. Smith is an outstanding example of the high quality of The W faculty and we look forward to his insights about writing and about his successful novel.”
