Department of Languages, Literature, and Philosophy
Dr. Bridget Pieschel, Chair
I welcome you on behalf of the faculty in the Department of Languages, Literature and Philosophy. I hope that you are able to use our website to explore all of our programs, to get to know our faculty, and to discover the many opportunities available in our department. Our faculty love to teach and enjoy offering a wide variety of courses from freshman core requirements to senior level seminars. In addition to their stellar performance in the classroom, they are also award-winning authors, valued translators, respected consultants, influential community leaders and internationally known scholars and speakers.
Our department houses majors in English, Spanish and Women’s Studies and offers minors in those fields plus Religious Studies, Philosophy and Foreign Languages. Students often take our courses as electives, adding breadth and depth to any program, but especially to those who major in Communication, History or Political Science. We often offer special topics courses which give faculty a chance to share their specialties and personal interests, such an upcoming philosophy class called “Film, Horror, and Sexual Difference: The Monstrous Feminine, Male Monsters, and Uncanny Others in Horror Films,” a recent one in women’s studies called “Women’s Voices, Women’s Lives: Oral Histories of Women in the Military, or a Spanish class this semester in “Machismo and Spanish Film.” We truly have something for every student’s interest.
If you want to talk about one of our majors or minors, or would like to discuss some of the many career opportunities open to students like ours who are skilled in writing, speaking and thinking, call our department office for an appointment or drop by my office in Painter Hall, room 103 C. I’ll be happy to see you!
