Music

By joining the Department of Music at The W, you will become a part of a rich history of musical and academic achievement.

We were the first institution in the state of Mississippi to be accredited by the National Association of the Schools of Music (NASM) in 1935.

Our alumni are music teachers, professors, music therapists, and independent musicians creating music, educating the next generation of musicians, and helping people all around the world.

We offer degrees in Music Education (Bachelor of Music), Music Therapy(Bachelor of Music) and Music(Bachelor of Arts) with an emphasis in voice or piano.  Scholarships are available to qualified applicants.

Our guest artist series brings renowned musicians from all around the world.  Most of our events are free and open to the public.

Historic Facility

Dubbed "The Temple of Music," Weenona Poindexter Music Hall (1905) is the preeminent music conservatory in the state of Mississippi.  The music hall completed renovations in November of 2012 to the tune of $14 million. The building features the 250-seat Connie Kossen Auditorium in the center of the building, individual practice rooms, a grand piano practice parlor, and a state-of-the-art audio and video recording suite.

COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Dr. Susan Hurley, assistant professor of voice at Mississippi University for Women, will speak at the International Congress of Voice Teachers (ICVT) this August in Stockholm, Sweden.

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Elizabeth Haley, assistant professor of music therapy at Mississippi University for Women, will travel to Montreal, QC, Canada, to present at the international conference of the Association for Music and Imagery (AMI).

Music department presents an evening of jazz

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women’s music department presents “An Evening of Jazz, Tangos, and Milongas,” a concert featuring the MUW Jazz Ensemble. The concert will take place Tuesday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Connie Sills Kossen Auditorium, Poindexter Hall.
