Ambulatory care and health education is the goal of the Campus Health Center.
All MUW and MSMS students, faculty and staff are eligible to use the Health Center. No fee is charged for routine visits to the Health Center. Spouses and dependent children over the age of three years also are eligible to use the health center for a fee of $15.00. There is a nominal charge to cover the cost of medications, supplies and complete physical exams for all individuals using the health center.
The Center, located in the Eckford Building, is administered by the Dean of the College of Nursing & Speech-Language Pathology. It is staffed by Nurse Practitioners who are faculty members in the College of Nursing. The Nurse Practitioners are master's and doctorally prepared registered nurses who in their expanded role are licensed to diagnose and treat many common conditions. The Nurse Practitioners in the health center are family nurse practitioners that are able to order tests, write prescriptions and refer to specialists as needed. The protocols for treatment are developed in conjunction with the Mississippi Board of Nursing and a collaborating physician. Additional staff includes a Registered Nurse/Health Center Coordinator and a Receptionist/Administrative Assistant. The Registered Nurse/Health Center Coordinator functions in the capacity of assisting the Nurse Practitioner. This is accomplished by taking blood pressure, temperature and a brief history of the present illness. The Registered Nurse/Health Center Coordinator is also present to assist individuals with any questions regarding medications, wellness practices, weight check, blood pressure values and general questions regarding health issues. Lab work can be drawn in the absence of a Nurse Practitioner with proper orders from a physician or nurse practitioner. TB skin testing can be administered and read by the Registered Nurse in the absence of the Nurse Practitioner. Injections can be administered by the Registered Nurse provided the individual provides the medication with the exact dosing information. If the supplies are provided by the individual there is not a charge. There will be a $5.00 charge if supplies are used from the health center supply stock. The exception to this will be allergy injections. A Nurse Practitioner must be present to administer allergy injections due to the possibility of a reaction and follow-up care.
The hours of operation for the Health Center are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday, closing one hour for lunch each day. The RN/Health Center Coordinator is available during these hours of operation. The Nurse Practitioner is available from 8:00 am to 12 Noon and from 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm. At times, it may be necessary to stop accepting patients prior to 12 Noon and 4 PM due to an elevated patient load.
When the Health Center is closed or a Nurse Practitioner is not available, local clinics or the emergency room at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle may be used by patients requiring care. A partial list of local walk-in clinics is listed below.
Student health insurance may be obtained through a commercial carrier. Information and pamphlets may be obtained in the Health Center, if needed.
Emergencies (such as difficulty breathing, heart attack, etc.) should contact 911 and the campus police department at (662)241-7777.
Please feel free to contact the Health Center at (662)329-7289 should you have any questions about our services. The Receptionist/Administrative Assistant is usually available by phone after 7:30 am to answer any question regarding staffing for that day.
