COLUMBUS, Miss. – The W’s Department of Health and Kinesiology is celebrating Women’s Health Awareness Week with presentations that empower women to make healthier choices.
“We have some excellent topics and excellent speakers lined up. Additionally, two of our speakers are graduate students in our health education program and one is currently finishing his BS in public health education,” said Dr. Irene Pintado, assistant professor of health education.
On Tuesday, Oct. 8, Jeremy Bogan, public health education intern, and Faleicha Bryant will present “The Home: The Key to Addressing Childhood Obesity.” Bryant has a bachelor’s in nutrition and is a master’s candidate in health education. The presentation will last from noon until 12:45 p.m. in the Pohl Building, Room 203.
Obstetrician and gynecologist Meredith Griffin will be speaking about annual screening for women and menopause Wednesday, Oct. 9 at a luncheon sponsored by The W and Baptist Memorial Hospital. The luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m. and will take place in Pope Banquet Room on the second floor of Hogarth Dining Center.
Cynthia Kohliem, nurse practitioner and master’s candidate in health education, will present “Managing Back Pain” from noon to 12:45 also in Room 203.
Pintado said, “The aim of this observance is to empower women to make their health a priority and encourage them to take steps to improve their physical and mental health and those of their families.”
Light refreshments will be served at both noon presentations. The luncheon is free, but tickets are limited and must be reserved in advance.
