COLUMBUS, Miss. – Some of the best business and leadership students in the state will be on Mississippi University for Women’s campus to compete at the Future Business Leaders of America- Phi Beta Lambda State Leadership Conference March 1-3.

“The PBL State Leadership Conference gives our students a great opportunity to get out of the classroom and put their knowledge to the test against their peers,” said Thomas Haffey, Phi Beta Lambda adviser and W instructor of marketing. “In addition to competitions, students also have the opportunity to network as well as campaign for leadership positions at the state and national level.”

During the PBL conference, approximately 150 students will compete in more than 50 business, legal and leadership-oriented testing and live performance events with students representing 15 community colleges and universities from throughout Mississippi.

The students who place during their events will qualify to compete against state winners from across the United States at the National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, Calif., June 24-27.

“For the College of Business and Professional Studies, hosting the conference is a team effort that requires planning and organization throughout the year to get us to this week,” added Haffey. “We are excited to get the chance to show off The W to so many exceptional students with the hope that they will choose us to further their education in the future.”

Marshall Ramsey, author and cartoonist, will serve as the keynote speaker for the opening ceremony Wed., March 1. Students will also attend a fish fry sponsored by the Columbus Convention & Visitors Bureau with live blues music from Stormy Monday at the Plymouth Bluff Center Thursday, March 2. The conference will conclude with the awards ceremony Friday, March 3.

This is fourth year in a row that The W has been chosen to host the conference. Phi Beta Lambda is open to all majors. Interested W students should contact Haffey at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
