health fair

COLUMBUS, Miss. -- The Department of Health and Kinesiology at Mississippi University for Women will host its annual community health fair Wednesday, March 29. This event will be held in the Pohl Gym from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

“The Community Health Fair is a great opportunity for The W and the attending vendors to provide information and services to our community,” said Cole Phillips, graduate assistant in the Department of Health and Kinesiology, who is the coordinator for the event.

This year’s theme is “Make Wellness Your Goal.” Several organizations will be available to answer questions and help attendees with their wellness and health goals.

“Our goal is to provide people with information about the health services that are available to them,” added Phillips.

The College of Nursing and Speech-Language Pathology will provide health screenings including: blood pressure, pulse and hearing. The Lions Club will conduct glaucoma and visual acuity tests. For the first time this year, the Mississippi Kidney Foundation will provide free screenings for kidney disease. Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle will conduct blood pressure, BMI, bone density screenings (for Women over 35 years of age) and a limited number of free blood sugar tests. Those who get blood sugar screenings are required to fast after midnight before the fair.

Also for the first time, The W’s Project CHEW (Cook Healthy, Eat Well) trailer will be in attendance to offer tips regarding health cooking techniques and recipe modifications.
