COLUMBUS, Miss. – On Monday, Jan. 13, the campus community and the public will be given the opportunity to preview fitness classes at the RecFitness kickoff at Mississippi University for Women.
The 5:30-7:30 p.m. kickoff in the Stark Recreation Center will feature demo classes such as Insanity, Kickbox, Zumba, Bodyworks, H.I.I.T., ending with abdominal work and a relaxing stretch.
“We have something for every level and every interest,” said Marion McEwen, health and wellness coordinator for the center. She added, “Our returning instructors, along with new ones, will help you get in shape, boost your energy, and feel your very best for the upcoming year.”
Monday will also serve as the kickoff and weigh in for the faculty, staff and full-time student Spring Challenge, titled “Shape Up and Ship Out.” The challenge ends the week of April 7.
The grand prize, a $500 Carnival Cruise gift certificate, will be awarded to one male and one female participant with the highest percentage of weight loss over the course of the 12 week Challenge. If the participants complete all four scheduled weigh-ins, they will receive a wellness prize package which includes promotional gear and a challenge T-shirt. All prizes were donated by the MUW Foundation.
McEwen has a tip for the participants; “Set a time each day to be physically active. You aren’t wasting your time, you are buying time when you move, eat healthy and get plenty of rest daily.”
For a fee, personal trainers are available at the center if participants need an extra push to meet fitness goals.
Also, beginning Jan. 27, Campus Recreation will offer a fitness boot camp on Monday and Wednesday from 6:10 a.m. -7 a. m until March 5. Those interested should sign up in the membership office by Jan. 23.
