Relieve stress at your desk with easy techniques

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Many studies show that stress related to work is a major problem for Americans. As a result, workers may find it hard to escape their work environment and decompress for just a few minutes.

 

Campus Recreation wellness coordinator at Mississippi University for Women, Marion McEwen offers some quick and easy techniques to bring calmness into your cubicle.

Now that spring is in the air, temperatures are perfect for a quick hike or picnic lunch on or off campus.

McEwen said the following tips are helpful in lowering stress and tension on the job:

  • Practice deep breathing exercises
  • Close the office door for five minutes
  • Go for a five minute walk to get some fresh air
  • Attend a health fitness class during lunch or after work

“At The W, Rec Fitness classes are offered everyday—including Yoga, Zumba, Pilates and more at the Stark Recreation Center,” she said.

“A lunch time workout is the perfect opportunity to relieve stress without having to leave campus.” McEwen added.

According to Active Health Management, there are also desk exercises such as chest and triceps presses, arm curls and side lateral raises to keep the heart rate up and provide a boost of energy.

Whether a job is in a fast-paced environment or a more routine office environment, there are plenty of options to stay physically and mentally healthy.
