Friday, May 4

8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. - Regalia (Cap & Gown) pickup at The Bookend (Barnes & Noble Bookstore)

11:00 a.m. - COMMENCEMENT PRACTICE report immediately to Painter Hall to line up. Tickets and honor cords (for those eligible) will be distributed at practice.

Note: Commencement practice is REQUIRED of all commencement participants.

If you have a conflict, please notify the Registrar's Office so your name will not be removed from the Line of March.

Saturday, May 5

10:00 a.m. - Conferring of degrees for candidates in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education and the College of Business and Professional Studies

2:00 p.m. - Conferring of degrees for candidates in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences



Commencement Parking



The City of Columbus will block streets throughout Downtown for the Market Street Festival and a significant amount of vehicle and foot traffic is expected.

The following detour has been provided for family and friends arriving west of the city on US-82 (Starkville/Jackson direction):

The Main Street/Highway 182 Exit will be closed to through traffic.

Take the Hwy 45/ 5th Street South Exit.
Take 5th Street South towards Historic Downtown Columbus.
Turn Left (East) on 5th Avenue North (5th St will be closed beyond this point).
Proceed to the 4-way Stop.
At the 4-Way Stop (7th Street North) Turn Right.
Continue on 7th St., crossing Main Street, to College Street.
Turn Left on to College Street.
Proceed on College Street to The W campus.

Parking is available in the locations marked on the map above. Handicap parking will be available directly behind Whitfield Hall.


Caps/Gowns/Honor Cords

Academic Regalia (cap and gown) is required to participate in Commencement, and you must order regalia through The Bookend. Caps and gowns will be issued at The Bookend from 8 am to 3 pm the day before Commencement. Please contact the bookstore at 662-329-7409 or This email address is being protected from spambots. The only regalia that students will be permitted to wear at Commencement is the regalia (caps, gowns, hoods) issued from The Bookend and honor cords issued by the Registrar's Office. You are not allowed to wear other cords, pins, medallions, sashes, etc. of sororities, fraternities, etc. You are not allowed to decorate your mortar board (cap) in any way.

Gold honor cords, for first bachelor degree students whose current cumulative and MUW grade point averages are 3.50 and above, will be distributed at Commencement practice. Blue honor cords will be distributed to students with Departmental Honors. Honors read for commencement are based on current GPAs. However, honors printed on diplomas and transcripts will be based on final calculations.

Regalia (gowns and hoods) must be returned to Hogarth immediately following the ceremony.


Diplomas for degrees awarded will be mailed within three weeks after grades are due.

Conferring of Degrees

10:00 a.m. - Conferring of degrees for candidates in the College of of Arts, Sciences, and Education and the College of Business and Professional Studies

Line-up is in Painter Hall at 9:00 a.m. Students not in line by 9:30 a.m. will be removed from the list.

2:00 p.m. - Conferring of degrees for candidates in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences

Line-up is in Painter Hall at 1:00 p.m. Students not in line by 1:30 p.m. will be removed from the list.

Commencement Tickets/Seating

Family and friends (including ALL children) attending commencement MUST have an admission ticket.

Guests should enter through the front entrance of Whitfield Hall. Four (4) tickets will be distributed to each student participating in commencement at commencement practice on Friday. Tickets will not be mailed. There are no reserved seats and no extra tickets.

Doors will open one hour prior to each ceremony. Tickets will only be honored until 15 minutes prior to the ceremony. At that time, the doors will be opened for all until seats are filled. Anyone arriving with a ticket after the honorable time is not guaranteed a seat, but will have the option to go to Parkinson Hall, Nissan Auditorium to view the live streaming if/when Rent Auditorium is full. There will also be a link available for Live Streaming at the MUW website.

Commencement Photographs

A professional photographer, Grad Images, will be at the ceremonies to take pictures as you cross the stage. We request that family members and friends refrain from taking pictures during the ceremony, especially with flash or at the front.
Grad Images will contact you about your pictures, or you can visit and register accordingly to view. Please call Grad Images Customer Service at 1-800-261-2576 if you have any questions.

Alumni Relations

The Alumni Office is always interested in receiving news of your activities and will help you keep in touch with MUW after graduation. Please visit the Alumni Relations web site at They will also be available at Hogarth as you return your regalia.


Transfer Credit

The deadline for submission of transfer work to the Office of the Registrar is the Wednesday following Commencement. Please notify faculty involved from other campuses of this deadline and request their assistance. If an official transcript will not be available by this date, please arrange for the institution's Registrar to notify the MUW Registrar of the final grade(s) prior to the deadline. Please note that transfer credit will be added to your MUW record and your degree will be posted only upon receipt of an official transcript. You will not graduate if official transcripts of grades are not received, and you must reapply for degree.

University Accounts

The deadline for candidates to clear University accounts is 5:00 p.m. on the Thursday prior to Commencement. Offices included are University Accounting (Comptroller), Housing, Health Center, Library, Registrar, Student Affairs and Campus Police. Diplomas and/or transcripts will not be issued to candidates until all accounts are cleared.
