Miller shares transition goals

Dear Campus Community,

Congratulations to all of you who make The W a Great College to Work For! Making The Chronicle of Higher Education's Honor Roll for 6 years in a row is a great recognition of our university community and the beautiful campus where we make a difference in the lives of our students - and each other.  We are three weeks into this new fiscal year - and I am both excited and honored to serve as Acting President.  I have loved this institution since I was a freshman so many years ago - and I am eager to continue the good work that we all do for the betterment of this campus and our students.

As the IHL Board continues with the expedited search process for the presidency, I am delegating many of the duties and responsibilities that I have traditionally fulfilled as Senior Vice President for Administration and Chief Financial Officer.

In the interim, the human resources function will report to Karen Clay, University Counsel.

Susan Sobley will serve as Director of University Accounting and Interim Chief Financial Officer.  In this role, she will review and sign all contracts, agreements, etc. related to University business and all personnel action forms as CFO.  The PeopleAdmin queue that has gone to the Vice President for Finance & Admin will now be routed to Susan.  She will have Banner approval authority for all the budget units that were assigned to the VPFA, with the exception of those related to operations and maintenance of facilities and the plant fund units.

Dave Haffly will serve as Director of Plymouth Bluff and Campus Operations.  In this role, he will negotiate with industry representatives on costs and materials for building construction/renovation, food services, facilities management and other contracted services.  He will review and sign all requests for IHL or Bureau of Buildings projects, and will have Banner approval authority for all the budget units related to operations and maintenance of facilities and plant fund units that were assigned to the VPFA.

In her role as Coordinator of Finance and Administration, Angela Jones will continue to facilitate the operation of these functions in addition to supervising Mail Services.

Thanks to all of you who have already participated in the listening sessions.  Those have been helpful in setting the following priorities for this transition period:

  • Communications and Building Relationships
  • Employee Morale
  • Financial Sustainability
  • Recruitment, Retention & Completion

More listening sessions have been scheduled in August and early September when more faculty will be on campus - but there's no need to wait for a formal listening session!  I value your input and your ideas about how we can make this Great College to Work For even better.
